I wondered about the term "nationality" here.  I think the author should really use the term "citizenship" instead. 

The reason this issue is even discussed in public is because the father boasted about his child raising prowess.  The boast was about the school his children was able to enter - not finish, not academic achievements, just entry.

This fact highlighted certain social condition in China.

1. Entry into popular schools - Peking University in this case - is in itself boast worthy.  You don't need to graduate to be proud.  And that one doesn't need to wait till graduation means getting in is more difficult than graduating, therefore more worthy of boasting. 

2. Beating up your kids is not only tolerated, but also boasted.

3. Parents are the one who accomplished this feat, not the hardworking, perseverance, intelligence or luck of the children.

4. Status like which school you attended and not what you have done is of primary importance in China.
